Beautiful Losers Short Films in Los Angeles Dec. 5th

This coming Saturday December 5th will be a screening of Beautiful Loser's Shorts at Cinefamily. Short film by Harmony Korine, Mike Mills, Chris Johanson, Geoff McFetridge, Clare E. Rojas, Stephen Powers, Spike Jones, Tobin Yelland, Jo Jackson, Thomas Campbell, and Cheryl Dunn.

Cinefamily Silent Movie Theater: Built in 1942 by John and Dorothy Hampton, The Silent Movie Theatre ran for decades as the only fully functioning silent movie theatre in the country. It has been fully restored to its original, vintage 1940s art deco design, along with a brand new screen and sound system, to help a new generation enjoy the pleasures of cinema in a beautiful theater.

I won't be able to attend, but I am sure it will be a fantastic night of films and some even better people/artists.

Mark-Anthony Polizzi

The very interesting sculpture/installation work of Mark-Anthony Polizzi is going nicely with my Sunday evening. His description of his work is far better than you'll get out of me.

Mark-Anthony Polizzi:
My work uses a process of reconstruction and unification to examine the domesticated chaos of the post consumer world. This area where the relatively ordered and relatively disordered coexist and interact might seem like a contradiction, considering the more austere and violent sense of chaos. However it is in this gray area in which I construct my work. These installations draw on the history and narrative properties of found objects, to bring out the human connection often lost in the glimmer and glitz of an ever growing material culture.

Chop / Cup

CHOP CUP from :weareom: on Vimeo.

A very interesting magic trick. Created by weareom. The end reminds me of a couple earlier posts here and here.

Valentina de Matha

Italian artist Valentina de Matha creates some outstanding work and has a very unique and informed approach to producing it. Her artistic research regards material taking shape by itself, transformation of things, ever-changing dynamics of metamorphosis, becoming, fullness and emptiness of life, macro and microcosmos. Through her work she creates tensions, dissonances, trying to match interior and exterior, contraction and expansion in between form and formlessness. She works with water in general and organic materials, such as paper, capable of undergoing the changes of time.

Better than Prince

Here is a great little music video for the Flairs "Better
than Prince." I'm not so much into the song as I am into
the animation. The lyrics are funny only they repeat
themselves over and over. It is pretty entertaining. And
to be completely honest, I like this way better than I
like Prince. I really only respect Prince as a musician.

If Drawings Were Photographs

It's Nice That has released their first 'zine, If Drawings Were Photographs. It is such a great idea, I can't believe it wasn't done sooner. Explained plainly as: "Rob came up with the idea and then asked me to do the drawings. The book is essentially about trying to recreate my drawings as photographs using anything that Rob could find." Simple. Fun. Done. Purchase it here.

Bot'Ox

This is the music video for French musicians Bot'Ox. It was directed by the amazing Swiss graphic designers/artists, Körner Union and produced by Big. It's a surreal look at flat-black Ford Focus station wagon hitting inflatable objects in slow motion. It is simple, beautiful and fun to watch.

Feaverish Photography blog

Monday morning web-wandering brought this amazing photography blog to my toes. Feaverish Photography is the work of Los Angeles based photographer and web designer Aaron Feaver. His photography blog is a collection of things that inspire him in photography, whether it is fashion, lifestyle, landscape, reportage, etc. He has some amazing work in his portfolio and a great eye for collecting and posting inspirations. Note: "A word about blog content: Photographers are frequently inspired by things your boss might prefer you not be inspired by at work. Breasts, butts, etc. I’m not going to censor the site, so be warned." A. Feaver

Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck

Charlotte Gainsbourg featuring Beck – Heaven Can Wait.

This is an amazing video directed by Keith Schofield. It is as if every scene could be it's own single work of art. This video is surreal and has a lot of interesting emotional and social twists. Enjoy.

Bb 2.0

I have seen a lot of different YouTube compilation videos, but so far this one takes the cake. Described here:
"In Bb 2.0 is a collaborative music and spoken word project conceived by Darren Solomon from Science for Girls, and developed with contributions from users. The videos can be played simultaneously -- the soundtracks will work together, and the mix can be adjusted with the individual volume sliders."

Like a Rolling Stone

This is a 2006 music video for Japanese musician Cornelius. It was directed by Koichiro Tsujikawa and is very hypnotic. It's an interesting commentary on the monotony of contemporary life. I don't know about you but I get so tired of sitting on my elephant while it dances with a beetle.

Landmasses and Railways

The B&W photography of Bertrand Fleuret is quite amazing. Some images are multi-exposure-lovliness while others are banal, contextually simplistic moments from life. He captures it all so well. Enjoy.

Kelly Allen

"Through combining a wide variety of images from a range of sources, I seek to create connections between subjects that are typically regarded as unrelated. By researching symbolism culled from a collection of cultural and spiritual dictionaries, I gain a new understanding for animals, colors, shapes, and so on. These creative attributes have served to aid people throughout history by honoring and respecting the creatures and substance of every day life. I am fascinated with the human compulsion to create meaning and narratives for subjects and occurrences in the world, on both the personal and the cultural level.

Life is amazing, mysterious, and rich with beauty and knowledge. It is also filled with opportunities to develop wisdom, which, at its deepest level, provides peace of mind and spirit. My work is here for you to awaken your imagination, spark your curiosity, and find connections between creatures and forms. Here you can be released from the constraints of time and obligation. Invent your own connections, or just look closely." -- Kelly Allen

Stumbled across the paintings of Stuart Cumberland today. He has quite an enormous body of work on his site. Unfortunately, there is not much info on him.
