It was beginning to out-grow it's old digs and needed a place to stretch out it's mental legs. "Susan Cianciolo’s mark defies definition: on one hand, she is a revered fashion designer who happens to make art and on the other, she is a conceptual iconic artist who occasionally designs clothing. Her work regardless of median provokes debate and pushes boundaries of contemporary art and modern fashion.

Gallery Space 15Twenty is proud to present Mountains and Flowers, which further explores Cianciolo’s Wisdom of FlowersCollection (SS10), debuted this past fall in NYC. This exhibition is all cream and white with hints of color and hand-painted flowers, inspired by the studies of flowers at the turn of the century, and also by the natural way indigenous cultures have incorporated flowers. And exclusively to Gallery Space, Cianciolo will be creating a supporting line for the exhibition featuring all sustainable pieces hand made by her and her students. To compliment the exhibition, Cianciolo will be curating a music series featuring her close-knit community of musicians, artists, family and friends."

This coming Saturday December 5th will be a screening of Beautiful Loser's Shorts at Cinefamily. Short film by Harmony Korine, Mike Mills, Chris Johanson, Geoff McFetridge, Clare E. Rojas, Stephen Powers, Spike Jones, Tobin Yelland, Jo Jackson, Thomas Campbell, and Cheryl Dunn.

Cinefamily Silent Movie Theater: Built in 1942 by John and Dorothy Hampton, The Silent Movie Theatre ran for decades as the only fully functioning silent movie theatre in the country. It has been fully restored to its original, vintage 1940s art deco design, along with a brand new screen and sound system, to help a new generation enjoy the pleasures of cinema in a beautiful theater.

I won't be able to attend, but I am sure it will be a fantastic night of films and some even better people/artists.

Mark-Anthony Polizzi:

My work uses a process of reconstruction and unification to examine the domesticated chaos of the post consumer world. This area where the relatively ordered and relatively disordered coexist and interact might seem like a contradiction, considering the more austere and violent sense of chaos. However it is in this gray area in which I construct my work. These installations draw on the history and narrative properties of found objects, to bring out the human connection often lost in the glimmer and glitz of an ever growing material culture.

On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), unveils Collection: MOCA's First Thirty Years, the largest comprehensive installation to date of its renowned permanent collection. MOCA's collection, which numbers nearly 6,000 works dating from 1939 to the present day, is internationally regarded as one of the most important collections of postwar art in the world. While works from the collection have been seen in over 100 thematic exhibitions at MOCA since the museum's founding in 1979, the new installation will make a significant portion of the collection accessible to the public on an long-term basis. The layout of Collection: MOCA's First Thirty Years will be chronological, providing a comprehensive history of the last 70 years of contemporary art and touching on every significant movement and development during this period. Filling the galleries at both of MOCA's downtown Los Angeles locations, the installation will occupy 24,000 square feet of exhibition space at MOCA Grand Avenue with works dating from 1939 through 1980, and an additional 26,000 square feet of exhibition space at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA with works dating from 1980 to the present. I've always been a big Jack Kerouac fan and also a follower of the work of Ed Ruscha. I heard about this project a couple months ago and I was very anxious to see it materialize. From the Gagosian gallery website:

The original novel was published in 1957 and it's about a group of crazy young people who just travel back and forth across the United States. Sometimes they hitch-hike and sometimes they drive cars. They steal cars and just want to be on the road the whole time. I've always liked that notion.

In 1951, Jack Kerouac wrote On the Road on his typewriter as a continuous 120 foot-long scroll, feverishly recording in twenty days his experiences during road trips in the United States and Mexico, which he began with Neil Cassady in the late 1940s. On the Road was finally published in 1957, and Kerouac was immediately acknowledged as the voice of the Beat Generation, a new group of writers, including Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs, who became known for their embracing of radical free-verse style.

Ed Ruscha's singular art has recorded the shifting emblems of American life in the form of Hollywood logos, stylized gas stations, and archetypal landscapes. His wry choice of words and indirect phrases mines the perpetual interplay between language as a physical thing and language as a transparent medium. During the sixties, he created a series of cheaply printed photographic books as deadpan meditations on the romantic vision of the road epitomized by the Beats. His typologies of the urban environment of Los Angeles included Twenty-six Gasoline Stations (1963) and Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966). In Royal Road Test (1967), he brought the word and the road together in a conceptual prank by documenting himself dropping a vintage typewriter from a speeding Buick.

Over the last couple of years, Ruscha has turned his attention to On the Road, resulting in his own version of Kerouac's Beat bible. Kerouac's entire text appears accompanied by black and white photographic illustrations that Ruscha has either taken himself, commissioned from other photographers, or selected from found images to refer closely to the details and impressions that the author describes, from car parts to jazz instruments, from sandwich stacks to tire burns on a desert road.

Coinciding with "Ed Ruscha : Fifty Years of Painting" at the Hayward Gallery in London, Gagosian is pleased to present an exhibition of selected illustrated spreads from this special version of On the Road, along with a bound copy of the limited-edition book.

On the Road is published by Gagosian Gallery and Steidl. The leather-bound book comprises 228 pages, signed and numbered by the artist in an edition of 350 and presented in a slip-case.

"The “Perpetual Storytelling Apparatus” is a drawing machine illustrating a never-ending story by the use of patent drawings. The machine translates words of a text into patent drawings. Seven million patents — linked by over 22 million references — form the vocabulary. By using references to earlier patents, it is possible to find paths between arbitrary patents. They form a kind of subtext. New visual connections and narrative layers emerge through the interweaving of the story with the depiction of technical developments."

I really never thought I would post something Disney but here it goes...This is “Destino” a short film collaboration between Walt Disney and Salvador Dali. Originally started in 1946, the project was either halted because of financial reasons or because of the content being too extreme. Finally in 2003 (57 years later), a team of Disney animators finished what Dali started and the film made its way around some film festivals. Check out one of the most unique animation collaborations ever made.

In his work one can see an exploration of earth and plastics, natural vs. manmade, and even the transitioning between these two worlds. The highly anticipated annual Art Review Power 100 list was just released on Thursday. The list this year reflects the fundamental changes that the global financial crisis has unleashed onto the art world. Almost a third of the entries are new to the list. Previous top artists and collectors have had steep drops. Steadily rising up the ranks are powerful and networked curators that have a huge influence on what gets seen and promoted.

The criteria used for the list include influence over the production of art, relevance to the art market and contribution to the art world over the past year. Hans Ulrich Obrist, the director of London’s Serpentine Gallery, takes the top spot in this year’s list, while superstar artist Damien Hirst, the previous #1, plummets to #48. Charles Saatchi, who topped the list in 2002, now occupies the 72nd spot. Gallery and museum directors occupy the top 4 rankings. Collectors on the list have suffered this year, due to their diminished pocketbooks and subsequent declining influence in the art world.

"The exhibition title refers to John Searle’s symbol processing machine model (1980): the Chinese box, or Chinese room. Searle’s argument addresses the distinction between processing information and understanding, emphasizing that highly intuitive or nuanced ideas cannot be communicated through a fixed system. Rather than functioning as a key or umbrella for the works in the show, the title sits alongside the artworks as another point of information to be considered with the works. It can also be read as relating to the gallery and the situation it sets up between the viewer/visitor and the object of contemplation. This film records an in-depth interview with Duchamp which took place five years before his death, at the time of his first ever one-man show (at the Pasadena Art Museum). It records for posterity Duchamp talking about his life, his ideas on art, why he chose to continue living in America after fleeing France in 1915, and why he virtually abandoned his work as an artist in 1923. An engaging dialogue takes place between Duchamp and film-maker Jean-Marie Drot as they go around the Pasadena show, with the artist commenting on the exhibits and using them to explain the various stages of the development of his work. This is punctuated by the games of chess, which were for Duchamp a passion and a metaphor for the mental discipline he applied to his art. In this film we gain a rare glimpse of him talking with humour and insight about his ideas, and living up to the myth of the artist-philosopher that has grown up around him.

Jeu d'échecs avec Marcel Duchamp was filmed late 1963 in Pasadena and New York for the Radio Télévision Franaise (RTF); first broadcast on 8 June 1964 and then shown at the International Festival of Artistic Films and Films of Art (Bergamo, 19 September 1964). "I start each day’s work without any preconceived idea or plan. In my studio anything can happen. Walls are crumbling and lines are flying off in all directions to join with other lines and patterns. My job is to catch resonant moments that exist for an instant within a vast interplay. I am aware of the speed and impermanence of existence and do not try to postpone the inevitable or prolong any illusion of stability. One of my favorite artists and probably one of the more conceptual artists of current times, Belgian-born Francis Alÿs. His work looks at and "attempts to analyze the totality of everyday life, through the passive movement through space." He later documents his experiences and observations through paintings, drawings, animations, and videos. Here are a couple of his videos:

There are some really unique and interesting works of art and jewelry at the gallery of Maryam Nassir Zadeh. I am especially fond of the sculptures of Phillip Low maybe even more so the photography of them. No more info on him however.
